Understanding the condition

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition. The immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin, so the body makes little or no insulin of its own. It is not caused by diet or lifestyle. It makes up around 10 per cent of diabetes in Australia and most often starts before age 30, although it can start at any age.1

Everyone living with type 1 diabetes needs insulin every day, by injection or insulin pump, along with regular glucose checks.23 Our Credentialled Diabetes Educators help you understand your diabetes, get confident with glucose sensors and pumps, and manage it in a way that fits your life.

Common questions

Can type 1 diabetes be cured?
+

There is no cure yet. Modern insulin, glucose sensors and pumps mean people living with type 1 diabetes can live long, full and active lives, and research into prevention and cures continues.

Is type 1 diabetes caused by eating too much sugar?
+

No. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition and is not caused by diet or lifestyle. Nothing you did caused it.

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
+

In type 1, the body makes little or no insulin, so insulin must be replaced. In type 2, the body still makes insulin but does not respond to it well, and over time may make less of it.

I have just been diagnosed. Where do I start?
+

Book with a Credentialled Diabetes Educator. The first sessions cover the essentials, including glucose monitoring, insulin and hypoglycaemia, and build from there. You do not need to learn everything at once, and you will not be doing it alone.

Can you help me get a CGM or insulin pump?
+

Yes. We explain the options available in Australia and NDSS subsidy eligibility, and we work with your endocrinologist on pump starts. Our CGM and insulin pump guides compare the current devices side by side.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us what is going on and we will point you to the right discipline, or to more than one. Most people start with a single appointment and leave with a plan the rest of the team can see.
