Automated insulin delivery (AID)

Automated insulin delivery (AID), often called hybrid closed loop, links an insulin pump with a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) so that software adjusts insulin automatically every few minutes based on sensor glucose.

Also called
AID, automated insulin delivery system, looping
Formerly called
artificial pancreas

What it means

The system raises or lowers background insulin, and many systems also give automatic correction doses, to keep glucose levels in range, particularly overnight. It is called hybrid because you still need to tell the system about meals and give or confirm meal doses.

For many people AID increases time in range, reduces hypoglycaemia and reduces hyperglycaemia. It works best with training, regular sensor and site changes, and a clear understanding of what the system can and cannot do.

PDC Health Hub's diabetes educators provide insulin pump and closed loop training.
