Hyperglycaemia

Hyperglycaemia means blood glucose above your target range. Short spells happen to most people living with diabetes; persistently high levels raise the risk of long-term complications and, for people who use insulin, can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis.

Also called
hyper, high blood sugar, high BGL, high glucose

What it means

Common causes include illness or infection, missed or insufficient insulin or medicines, more carbohydrate than usual, stress, some medicines such as corticosteroids, and a blocked or dislodged pump line. Symptoms include thirst, passing more urine, tiredness and blurred vision.

If you use insulin, high glucose with ketones needs prompt action under your sick day action plan. Highs that keep happening without a clear reason are worth raising with your diabetes team, as medicines or doses may need adjusting.
