Understanding the condition

Cardiovascular disease covers conditions of the heart and blood vessels, such as coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes and kidney disease all raise the risk. Australian guidelines recommend an overall cardiovascular risk assessment for adults aged 45 to 79, from age 35 for people living with diabetes, and from age 30 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.12

Diabetes and heart disease are closely linked, so our team looks at heart health for everyone we support. Our exercise physiologists run safe, monitored programs, and our dietitians help you build a heart-healthy way of eating, coordinated with your GP and cardiologist.

Common questions

Is it safe for me to exercise?
+

For most people, yes, and it is one of the most effective ways to lower cardiovascular risk. Our exercise physiologists assess you first, design a program that suits your heart and monitor you as you go. After a recent heart event, we work with your cardiology team on timing.

How is cardiovascular disease linked to diabetes?
+

Diabetes raises cardiovascular risk, so managing glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol together gives the best protection.

Do I need a referral?
+

No referral is needed for private appointments. With a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, Medicare rebates apply to up to five eligible allied health visits a calendar year.

Can you work with my GP and cardiologist?
+

Yes. We coordinate with your GP and treating specialists so everyone works from the same plan.

Is telehealth available?
+

Yes, many of our services are available by phone or video where appropriate.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us what is going on and we will point you to the right discipline, or to more than one. Most people start with a single appointment and leave with a plan the rest of the team can see.
