A sick day action plan is a written plan, made with your diabetes team, that tells you how to manage glucose, ketones, food, fluids and medicines when you are unwell.
Illness and infection usually push glucose up, even if you are eating less. Your plan sets out how often to check glucose and ketones, how to adjust insulin, what to eat and drink, and when to seek help.
Some medicines may need to be paused while you are sick and dehydrated, such as SGLT2 inhibitors and metformin, and restarted once you are eating and drinking normally. Never stop insulin unless your plan or your doctor says to.
The ADEA publishes sick day action plan templates that your diabetes educator can complete with you.
Our clinicians can explain how this applies to you and help with the next step, whether that is a referral, a device, funding or a plan the rest of the team can see.
