Infusion sets, reservoirs, cartridges and pods. These are pump specific, so the model you use decides what will fit.
Overview
An insulin pump delivers insulin through a thin cannula sitting just under the skin. The consumables are the parts changed regularly: the infusion set with its cannula and tubing, and the reservoir or cartridge that holds the insulin. Patch pumps combine both into a single pod.
Sets are usually changed every two to three days. Changing on schedule matters, because a site left in too long is one of the most common reasons for unexplained high glucose levels.
Insulin pump consumables are subsidised through the NDSS for registered users who meet the access criteria. In any 180 day period you can obtain up to 90 insulin pump cannulas and up to 90 reservoirs or cartridges.
Subsidised access to pump consumables has its own eligibility requirements, so if you are new to a pump it is worth checking your registration before your first order. The NDSS Helpline is 1800 637 700.
Buying guide
Three things decide what you need: the pump, the cannula and the tubing.
If you are changing brands, or you have had sites failing early, that is worth a conversation rather than a guess.
What you pay depends on your NDSS entitlement, so choose an option on a card to see its price before adding it to the cart. Concession, Closing the Gap, DVA and private purchase prices all differ, and eligibility is verified before dispensing.
