Overview

About this sensor

Dexcom G7 is Dexcom's latest real-time continuous glucose monitor in Australia, combining a small all-in-one sensor with a fast warm-up and readings sent straight to a compatible smartphone or receiver.

G7 supports alerts for highs, lows and rapid changes, and data sharing with family and your care team through Dexcom apps. It is NDSS subsidised for eligible people living with diabetes.

Our credentialled diabetes educators can help you decide whether G7 suits you, fit your first sensor, set up alerts, and connect your data to the clinic.

What it does well

  • 30-minute warm-up, the fastest of the NDSS-subsidised sensors
  • Works with three pump systems in Australia: Omnipod 5, Tandem t:slim X2 and mylife Loop
  • Lower NDSS co-payment per sensor than 15-day sensors
  • Much smaller than the Dexcom G6
  • Built-in transmitter, so nothing separate to charge or replace
  • Direct to Apple Watch glucose readings without your phone nearby
  • Share with up to 10 followers through the Dexcom Follow app
  • No routine finger-prick calibration

Things to weigh up

  • 10-day wear time, shorter than FreeStyle Libre sensors (15 days)
  • Not compatible with Medtronic MiniMed systems (780G uses Guardian sensors only)
  • Sensor adhesive may cause skin sensitivity in some users
  • Requires compatible smartphone or Dexcom receiver

Funding for this sensor

Subsidised through the NDSS CGM Access Program for eligible people living with type 1 diabetes. Each sensor carries a co-payment set by the NDSS, lower than for 15-day sensors because a G7 lasts 10 days. There is no co-payment for people under 21, adults with a concession card, or people planning a pregnancy, pregnant or who have just had a baby. Access must be certified by an authorised health professional such as an endocrinologist or credentialled diabetes educator.

Getting a CGM through the NDSS

Through the NDSS a sensor costs a fraction of the self-funded price, but not everyone is eligible. This is how access works in Australia, checked against the NDSS in September 2026.

Who can get a subsidised CGM
+

Everyone living with type 1 diabetes can apply for subsidised CGM through the NDSS. People under 21 with a rare condition very similar to type 1 diabetes who need insulin may also be eligible. You need to be registered with the NDSS first.

Who signs your access form
+

An authorised health professional confirms you are eligible: an endocrinologist, a credentialled diabetes educator, or another health professional who specialises in diabetes, such as a physician, paediatrician or nurse practitioner. Our credentialled diabetes educators can do this at your appointment.

What it costs
+

You collect sensors from an NDSS Access Point, usually a community pharmacy, and most people pay a co-payment for each sensor. There is no co-payment for people under 21, for adults with a Commonwealth concession card or a DVA Gold or White Card, or for people with type 1 diabetes who are planning a pregnancy, pregnant or have recently had a baby. The co-payment for this sensor is shown alongside.

Changing to a different sensor
+

Your NDSS access lists the sensor you are approved for. Before you can order a different one, an authorised health professional needs to update your access. If you use your sensor with an insulin pump, check the pump works with the new sensor before you change.

Type 2 diabetes and CGM
+

CGM is not currently subsidised through the NDSS for type 2 diabetes, so sensors are self-funded. Some people find a few weeks of CGM useful to see how food, activity and medicines affect their glucose. Ask us whether it is worth the cost for you.

When a reading does not match how you feel
+

A CGM measures glucose in the fluid under the skin, so it runs a few minutes behind your blood glucose, most of all when levels are changing quickly. If your symptoms do not match the reading, during warm-up, or when your system asks for one, check with a finger-prick test and act on that result. Keep your meter and strips on hand.
