Overview

About this sensor

Dexcom G6 was a real-time continuous glucose monitor that sent glucose readings to a compatible phone or receiver every five minutes, with no routine finger-prick calibration.

Dexcom discontinued the G6 on 30 September 2026, and the G6 sensor and transmitter left the NDSS on 1 October 2026. The NDSS moved G6 users to the Dexcom G7. If you used a G6 with an insulin pump, your pump software or pods may have needed to change as well.

This page is kept for reference. Our credentialled diabetes educators can update your NDSS access, check what your pump needs and help you start on your new sensor.

What it does well

  • Proven track record with years of clinical use in Australia
  • Factory calibrated, no finger-prick calibrations required
  • Compatible with Tandem t:slim X2 and YpsoPump (CamAPS FX)
  • Share/Follow feature for remote monitoring by family and carers
  • Dexcom Clarity data platform for reports and healthcare team sharing

Things to weigh up

  • Discontinued 30 September 2026 and delisted from the NDSS on 1 October 2026
  • 2-hour warm-up (G7 is 30 minutes)
  • Separate reusable transmitter
  • Does not work with the MiniMed 780G
  • Larger than the G7

Funding for this sensor

The G6 was subsidised through the NDSS until 30 September 2026. The G6 sensor (NDSS code 960) and the G6 transmitter (code 955) were delisted on 1 October 2026, and the NDSS moved G6 users to the Dexcom G7. Anyone switching sensors needs their CGM access updated by an authorised health professional such as an endocrinologist or credentialled diabetes educator.

This sensor is being withdrawn

Plan your switch before your last sensor runs out. If you use it with an insulin pump, your pump software or pods may need to change too. A credentialled diabetes educator can update your NDSS access and take you through the move.

Getting a CGM through the NDSS

Through the NDSS a sensor costs a fraction of the self-funded price, but not everyone is eligible. This is how access works in Australia, checked against the NDSS in September 2026.

Who can get a subsidised CGM
+

Everyone living with type 1 diabetes can apply for subsidised CGM through the NDSS. People under 21 with a rare condition very similar to type 1 diabetes who need insulin may also be eligible. You need to be registered with the NDSS first.

Who signs your access form
+

An authorised health professional confirms you are eligible: an endocrinologist, a credentialled diabetes educator, or another health professional who specialises in diabetes, such as a physician, paediatrician or nurse practitioner. Our credentialled diabetes educators can do this at your appointment.

What it costs
+

You collect sensors from an NDSS Access Point, usually a community pharmacy, and most people pay a co-payment for each sensor. There is no co-payment for people under 21, for adults with a Commonwealth concession card or a DVA Gold or White Card, or for people with type 1 diabetes who are planning a pregnancy, pregnant or have recently had a baby. The co-payment for this sensor is shown alongside.

Changing to a different sensor
+

Your NDSS access lists the sensor you are approved for. Before you can order a different one, an authorised health professional needs to update your access. If you use your sensor with an insulin pump, check the pump works with the new sensor before you change.

Type 2 diabetes and CGM
+

CGM is not currently subsidised through the NDSS for type 2 diabetes, so sensors are self-funded. Some people find a few weeks of CGM useful to see how food, activity and medicines affect their glucose. Ask us whether it is worth the cost for you.

When a reading does not match how you feel
+

A CGM measures glucose in the fluid under the skin, so it runs a few minutes behind your blood glucose, most of all when levels are changing quickly. If your symptoms do not match the reading, during warm-up, or when your system asks for one, check with a finger-prick test and act on that result. Keep your meter and strips on hand.
