Overview

About this pump

A tubed insulin pump with SmartGuard automated insulin delivery. Uses the Guardian 4 CGM sensor as an integrated system. Automatically adjusts basal insulin and can deliver auto-correction boluses to help maintain target glucose levels.

What it does well

  • SmartGuard adjusts insulin delivery automatically
  • Auto-correction boluses to bring highs down
  • Large 300-unit reservoir suits higher insulin needs
  • Strong waterproof rating (IPX8)
  • Colour screen

Trade-offs to consider

  • Automated delivery works only with MiniMed's own sensor (Guardian 4 in Australia)
  • No phone bolus: all dosing is done on the pump itself
  • Tubed design
  • Needs AA battery replacements

Which CGM it works with

Guardian 4

App: MiniMed Mobile App

Guardian 4 is the sensor that works with the MiniMed 780G for SmartGuard automated insulin delivery in Australia. Other brands of CGM cannot drive this pump.

Paying for a pump and getting started

The pump, its supplies and the sensor that drives it are funded separately in Australia. This is how it usually works, whichever pump you choose.

Private health insurance
+

Insulin pumps are covered by hospital cover when supplied as part of a hospital admission, and this is the most common way adults fund one. Gold hospital policies must include insulin pumps; check whether yours does. Expect a waiting period of up to 12 months for a pre-existing condition, and most insurers fund a replacement every four to five years.

Insulin Pump Program for under 21s
+

A federally funded program that provides a mylife YpsoPump with CamAPS FX to eligible children and young people under 21 living with type 1 diabetes, whose family has no private cover for pumps and meets an income test. Diabetes Australia took over the program in August 2026. Applications are closed for now and are expected to reopen later in 2026.

NDSS pump consumables
+

Infusion sets, reservoirs and pods are subsidised through the NDSS for people living with type 1 diabetes who use a pump, and people with other types can apply for special consideration. An endocrinologist, credentialled diabetes educator, nurse practitioner or doctor who specialises in diabetes signs the form; GPs cannot. The pump itself is not an NDSS product.

The sensor that drives automated delivery
+

Automated insulin delivery needs a CGM that pairs with your pump. CGM sensors are subsidised through the NDSS for people living with type 1 diabetes, and some people with other conditions also meet the criteria. The CGM section above lists the sensors that work with this pump.

What a pump start involves
+

Your endocrinologist decides with you whether a pump suits you and sets your starting doses. A credentialled diabetes educator or the manufacturer's trainer then teaches you to use it, and you have close follow-up in the first weeks while your settings are adjusted.

Upgrading or replacing a pump
+

If your warranty is ending or your pump is being discontinued, talk to us early. Insurers and the program have their own rules on replacements, and a new system usually means new consumables and sometimes a new sensor.
