Health Screening

Allied health screening for type 2 diabetes risk, heart health risk factors, nutrition and everyday habits, using validated questionnaires and simple measurements. Book a 20 to 30 minute nutrition check or health check in one of our clinics or by telehealth, or have us screen your team on site at a workplace, a campus or a community event.

Find risk early, while there is room to act

Type 2 diabetes and heart disease often build for years without symptoms. Diabetes Australia estimates that up to 500,000 Australians are living with type 2 diabetes that has not yet been diagnosed. This is allied health screening rather than a GP medical check: validated risk questionnaires, measurements, and a conversation about the habits you can change, with a clear next step at the end. We run it in our clinics and we take it to workplaces, universities and community events.

PHOTO NEEDED · Dietitian and client going through a food diary or healthy eating score at a consult desk, both faces visible, consent signed

Nutrition check

A 20 to 30 minute review with an Accredited Practising Dietitian. A validated healthy eating questionnaire, your score explained, and two or three changes worth making. Good on its own or as a yearly check.

PHOTO NEEDED · Clinician taking a seated blood pressure reading and explaining an AUSDRISK score, calm clinic setting

Health check

A 20 to 30 minute appointment covering type 2 diabetes risk, blood pressure, weight and waist, nutrition and everyday habits, with finger-prick tests on request. Everything in the table below.

PHOTO NEEDED · Screening table set up at a workplace or event, two clinicians seeing staff, PDC branding visible

On-site screening

The same checks taken to a workplace, a mine site, a campus or a community event, for a group rather than one person. Quoted per event, and set out further down this page.

What a health check covers

Every check comes with a clear next step. If a result sits outside the healthy range, we tell you what it means on the day and who to see next. A nutrition check is the shorter, food-focused version, covering the nutrition row with a dietitian.

Type 2 diabetes risk
How we check it
AUSDRISK questionnaire, completed with a clinician
If it needs attention
A high score means your GP should arrange a blood test. If you are 40 to 49, a high score also makes you eligible for a Medicare-funded GP health assessment.
Blood pressure
How we check it
Seated reading in clinic or on site, or your own home reading by telehealth
If it needs attention
A raised reading is sent to your GP to confirm and, if needed, manage.
Weight and waist
How we check it
Height, weight, body mass index and waist measurement
If it needs attention
Our dietitians and exercise physiologists can help you set a realistic goal and reach it.
Nutrition
How we check it
A validated healthy eating questionnaire, scored on the spot
If it needs attention
You leave with a score and two or three changes worth making. Our Accredited Practising Dietitians can take it further.
Activity, sleep and habits
How we check it
Validated questions on movement, sitting, sleep, smoking and alcohol
If it needs attention
Personal recommendations on the day, and a referral within our team where it would help.
Finger-prick tests
How we check it
Blood glucose, cholesterol or HbA1c, on request and where our clinician decides it is useful
If it needs attention
A raised result is a reason to have a laboratory test through your GP. Diagnosis is made on a laboratory sample, not on a finger-prick.

Common questions about health screening

Plain answers about who should be checked, what it costs and what happens next. Your GP can help with anything that depends on your own health history.

What is the difference between a nutrition check and a health check?
+

A nutrition check is a 20 to 30 minute review with an Accredited Practising Dietitian, focused on what you eat: a validated healthy eating questionnaire, your score explained, and a couple of changes to work on. A health check is the fuller appointment and covers type 2 diabetes risk, blood pressure, weight and waist, nutrition and everyday habits, with finger-prick tests on request. If you are not sure which suits you, call our care team and they will tell you.

Can I have a health check or nutrition check by telehealth?
+

Yes, and we have run both this way before. The questionnaires, your scores, the explanation and the plan all work over video, which suits people out of town, on a roster or short of time. For blood pressure, weight and waist we will ask you to use your own monitor, scales and tape measure and read the numbers out, or we can take them at a later visit. Finger-prick tests have to be done in person.

Who should have a type 2 diabetes risk check?
+

The RACGP recommends a risk check with AUSDRISK every three years from age 40. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be screened every year from age 18 with a blood test rather than the questionnaire. If you have had diabetes in pregnancy or have been told your blood glucose was high, see your GP about a blood test, because you are already in a higher risk group.

Is health screening covered by Medicare?
+

Screening with us does not attract a Medicare rebate, and our care team will confirm the fee when you book. On-site screening for a workplace, university or event is quoted to the organisation instead. Your GP can bill Medicare for some health assessments, including one every three years for people aged 40 to 49 at high risk of type 2 diabetes, a yearly assessment for people aged 75 and over living at home, and a Heart Health Check.

What happens if my risk is high?
+

We explain your results on the day and, with your consent, send a summary to your GP, who can arrange blood tests and a full heart health risk assessment. If you are diagnosed with a chronic condition, your GP can prepare a Chronic Condition Management Plan, which gives Medicare rebates for up to five allied health visits a calendar year with our team.

What is prediabetes, and can it be turned around?
+

Prediabetes means your blood glucose is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range, and it is diagnosed with a blood test arranged by your GP. Large trials in the United States and Finland found that structured changes to eating and activity cut the number of people who went on to develop type 2 diabetes by more than half over about three years. Our dietitians and exercise physiologists can help you make those changes.

Do I need to see my GP first?
+

No. You can book a screening directly online or by phone. With your consent we send your results to your GP, so they stay in charge of any tests or treatment you need.

Who sees the results from an on-site screening?
+

The person screened does. Their results are theirs, and with their consent we can send a summary to their GP. The employer, university or event organiser receives de-identified group results only, so they can see the themes across the group. Nothing that identifies a person is shared without that person's written consent.

Can you run screening at our workplace, site or event?
+

Yes. We screen on mining and resources sites, at universities, in offices and at community events, and we work around rosters and shift changes. Tell us the date, the location, roughly how many people and what you want covered, and we will quote for the day. You provide a private space; we bring the clinicians and the equipment.
