A clear, ready-to-drink glucose drink with 75 g of glucose in 300 mL. It is the glucose load used in a standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and some people also keep it on hand as a fast-acting glucose source for treating a hypo.
Use it only as directed by your doctor or pathology provider, and follow their instructions on fasting and timing. Ask your pathology provider whether they supply the drink or want you to bring one.
A hypo is usually treated with about 15 g of fast-acting glucose, which is about 60 mL of this drink, not the whole bottle. Follow your own hypo action plan, recheck your glucose after 15 minutes, and repeat if you are still low. If a person cannot swallow safely, give nothing by mouth, place them on their side, give glucagon if it has been prescribed, and call 000. Our diabetes educators can help you write a hypo action plan.
A private purchase.
How much should I drink for a hypo?
About 60 mL gives around 15 g of glucose. Your hypo action plan may set a different amount, so follow that.
Can I use this for a glucose tolerance test at home?
No. The test is done by a pathology provider, who will tell you when and how to drink it.
Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
