About this service

If you are injured at work in Western Australia, a workers compensation claim can cover medical and health expenses that are reasonable, alongside income compensation. In outline, you report the injury to your employer, see a doctor and obtain a First Certificate of Capacity, and complete a Workers Compensation Claim Form. Your employer has seven days to complete their section and lodge the claim with their insurer, and the insurer must notify you of its decision, which is acceptance, rejection or deferral, within 14 days.1 Decisions on claims and on which treatment costs are reasonable sit with the insurer.

WorkCover WA expects health providers to follow the Clinical Framework for the Delivery of Health Services. Its principles are to measure and demonstrate the effectiveness of treatment, take a biopsychosocial approach, empower the injured person to manage their injury, set goals that focus on function, participation and return to work, and base treatment on the best available research evidence.2 For a worker likely to need more than 10 physiotherapy consultations, a physiotherapy Treatment Management Plan is used to show how the framework is being applied and what the future treatment options are, and it gives the insurer a way to assess whether treatment and costs are reasonable.3,4 The individual techniques we use, such as exercise or manual therapy, are described on their own pages.

Return to work is the thread running through care. WorkCover WA says that your active participation is essential and that you should take an active role in your Return to Work Program.5 Our job is to help you recover function and plan a safe return, and to report clearly. That means reports on your condition, treatment and progress to your insurer, and communication with your employer and doctor about what you can currently do, focused on function rather than only pain.

What is involved

  • Confirming your claim details, including your claim number, insurer and whether the claim has been accepted.
  • An assessment of your injury, function and work demands, with goals focused on function, participation and return to work.
  • A treatment plan, usually exercise-based with hands-on therapy where it helps, and a Treatment Management Plan if more than 10 consultations are likely.
  • Progress measures and reports to your insurer, your doctor and, where appropriate, your employer, about what you can do.
  • Planning for graded return to work, including advice on duties, with review as your capacity changes.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?
+

Most of our services can be booked without one. You do need a GP referral to claim a Medicare rebate, and a Home Medicines Review or Residential Medication Management Review always starts with a GP referral. NDIS, DVA and workers' compensation claims each have their own paperwork. If you are not sure, call us on (08) 6110 0570 and we will check before you book.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
+

If your GP has prepared a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan and referred you to us, Medicare pays a rebate for up to five eligible allied health visits a calendar year, shared across disciplines. Private health cover may also contribute, depending on your policy. We confirm what applies to you when you book.

Can I be seen by telehealth?
+

Many of our services can be delivered by secure video call. Where a service needs a hands-on assessment, such as a foot or physiotherapy examination, we will book you in person at one of our ten clinics.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
+

Your referral or care plan if you have one, a list of your current medicines, any recent test results, and your Medicare, DVA or NDIS details. If you use a glucose meter, CGM or insulin pump, bring that too.

Can someone come with me?
+

Yes. A family member, carer, interpreter or support worker is welcome at any appointment. If you need an interpreter, let us know when you book.
