Home Sleep Study & Assessment

Screening for suspected obstructive sleep apnoea and home sleep studies run by our own team with the Nox A1, with referral for in-laboratory studies when they are needed.

About this service

Many people with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are undiagnosed. Symptoms such as loud snoring, witnessed apnoeas, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches and poor concentration are common, but often put down to other causes. At PDC Health Hub we screen for suspected sleep apnoea and run home sleep studies ourselves, so you are assessed promptly and without being passed between services.

What our assessment involves

  • Validated sleep questionnaires including the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and STOP-Bang
  • Clinical assessment of risk factors including BMI, neck circumference, cardiovascular history and alcohol use
  • Review of current sleep patterns, symptoms and daytime impairment
  • A home sleep study run by our team where it is indicated
  • Referral for an in-laboratory study where your presentation needs one
  • Communication with your GP and specialist about the findings

Your home sleep study

  • We use the Nox A1, a small recorder you wear overnight in your own bed
  • We fit the device at the clinic and show you how to put it on at home
  • You return it the next day and we take you through what happens next
  • Some people need an in-laboratory study at a sleep centre instead, usually for more complex presentations, and we arrange the referral

Medicare

Medicare rebates apply to sleep studies with a referral from your GP or a specialist. Our team can help you work out which pathway applies to you.

Preparation tips

Note any symptoms your partner has observed (snoring, breathing pauses), and bring a diary of your sleep patterns, wake time and daytime energy levels for the past week.

2

Assessment and goals

3

One plan, one team

With your consent, your plan is shared with your GP and with other PDC clinicians you see, so everyone works from the same page.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?
+

Most of our services can be booked without one. You do need a GP referral to claim a Medicare rebate, and a Home Medicines Review or Residential Medication Management Review always starts with a GP referral. NDIS, DVA and workers' compensation claims each have their own paperwork. If you are not sure, call us on (08) 6110 0570 and we will check before you book.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
+

If your GP has prepared a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan and referred you to us, Medicare pays a rebate for up to five eligible allied health visits a calendar year, shared across disciplines. Private health cover may also contribute, depending on your policy. We confirm what applies to you when you book.

Can I be seen by telehealth?
+

Many of our services can be delivered by secure video call. Where a service needs a hands-on assessment, such as a foot or physiotherapy examination, we will book you in person at one of our ten clinics.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
+

Your referral or care plan if you have one, a list of your current medicines, any recent test results, and your Medicare, DVA or NDIS details. If you use a glucose meter, CGM or insulin pump, bring that too.

Can someone come with me?
+

Yes. A family member, carer, interpreter or support worker is welcome at any appointment. If you need an interpreter, let us know when you book.
