About this service

Return to work and sport planning is a structured, step by step plan for getting back to your job or your sport after an injury, surgery or a period of illness. Your physiotherapist looks at what your body can currently do, what your work or sport demands, and what needs to change in between. For work, the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine consensus statement says that good work is beneficial to health and wellbeing, and that long-term work absence, work disability and unemployment generally have a negative effect.1 The Clinical Framework for the Delivery of Health Services, endorsed by WorkCover WA, also sets goals of function, participation and return to work within a biopsychosocial approach.2

For sport, the 2016 international consensus statement on return to sport describes a continuum from return to participation, to return to sport, to return to performance. It calls for a shared decision between you, your clinicians and your coach, and for criteria-based progression rather than time alone.3 We use tests of strength, movement and sport or work-specific tasks as guides to inform a decision, not as a guarantee that you will not be re-injured.

In practice you will have an assessment, agree goals, and follow a staged plan that may include modified duties or hours at work, or graded training in sport, with testing at set milestones. With your consent, we write reports for your GP, insurer, employer or NDIS provider describing your current function and capacity and what we recommend. NDIS participants provide evidence from their allied health professional that therapy supports are right for them, and our reports can help provide this.5

What is involved

  • Assessment of your injury, current strength, movement and endurance, and the demands of your job or sport, such as duties, hours, training load and any contact or high-risk tasks.
  • Agreed goals and a staged plan, for example modified duties or graded hours at work, or a progression from rehabilitation to training to competition.
  • Testing at set milestones, such as strength, functional and movement tests, work-specific or sport-specific tasks, and your own confidence, to inform each step.
  • With your consent, written reports and liaison with your GP, insurer, employer or NDIS provider about capacity, recommended changes and progress.
  • Review and adjustment as you progress, with a plan for managing load and reducing the chance of the problem coming back.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?
+

Most of our services can be booked without one. You do need a GP referral to claim a Medicare rebate, and a Home Medicines Review or Residential Medication Management Review always starts with a GP referral. NDIS, DVA and workers' compensation claims each have their own paperwork. If you are not sure, call us on (08) 6110 0570 and we will check before you book.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
+

If your GP has prepared a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan and referred you to us, Medicare pays a rebate for up to five eligible allied health visits a calendar year, shared across disciplines. Private health cover may also contribute, depending on your policy. We confirm what applies to you when you book.

Can I be seen by telehealth?
+

Many of our services can be delivered by secure video call. Where a service needs a hands-on assessment, such as a foot or physiotherapy examination, we will book you in person at one of our ten clinics.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
+

Your referral or care plan if you have one, a list of your current medicines, any recent test results, and your Medicare, DVA or NDIS details. If you use a glucose meter, CGM or insulin pump, bring that too.

Can someone come with me?
+

Yes. A family member, carer, interpreter or support worker is welcome at any appointment. If you need an interpreter, let us know when you book.
