About this service

Physiotherapy exercise classes are group sessions led by a physiotherapist. Exercises are chosen to build strength, movement and fitness, and the physiotherapist can scale them up or down for each person in the room. They suit people who have finished a block of one to one care, people who want structure and company while exercising, and people with long-term conditions who need to keep moving.

Exercise is a core part of care for many musculoskeletal conditions. Examples include knee osteoarthritis and persistent low back pain.1,2 Exercise and Sports Science Australia advises that exercise for persistent pain should be individualised, goal-oriented and graded,3 and the Osteoarthritis of the Knee Clinical Care Standard also covers physical activity and exercise.4 We do not claim classes are better than individual sessions. What matters is exercising regularly and at the right level.

In a class, your physiotherapist demonstrates each exercise, watches technique across the group and adjusts exercises for people who need them easier or harder. Mild discomfort while exercising is common, and your physiotherapist will explain what to expect and what to report.3 Exercising with others helps some people keep going, but a class gives less one to one attention than an individual session. If your needs are complex, we may suggest starting with individual sessions.

What is involved

  • A suitability check, usually with an assessment, so exercises can be adjusted for your condition, injury or surgery.
  • Joining a class that matches your goals and current level, with other people exercising at their own level.
  • Exercises demonstrated by your physiotherapist, with technique cues and options to make each one easier or harder.
  • Gradual progression over weeks as your strength, movement and confidence improve.
  • Review with your physiotherapist, and a plan to continue independently or return to one to one sessions if you need more support.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?
+

Most of our services can be booked without one. You do need a GP referral to claim a Medicare rebate, and a Home Medicines Review or Residential Medication Management Review always starts with a GP referral. NDIS, DVA and workers' compensation claims each have their own paperwork. If you are not sure, call us on (08) 6110 0570 and we will check before you book.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
+

If your GP has prepared a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan and referred you to us, Medicare pays a rebate for up to five eligible allied health visits a calendar year, shared across disciplines. Private health cover may also contribute, depending on your policy. We confirm what applies to you when you book.

Can I be seen by telehealth?
+

Many of our services can be delivered by secure video call. Where a service needs a hands-on assessment, such as a foot or physiotherapy examination, we will book you in person at one of our ten clinics.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
+

Your referral or care plan if you have one, a list of your current medicines, any recent test results, and your Medicare, DVA or NDIS details. If you use a glucose meter, CGM or insulin pump, bring that too.

Can someone come with me?
+

Yes. A family member, carer, interpreter or support worker is welcome at any appointment. If you need an interpreter, let us know when you book.
