Massage and Soft Tissue Therapy

Hands-on massage and tool assisted soft tissue therapy from a Perth physiotherapist for muscle tightness and pain, alongside exercise.

#40ab4b

About this service

Massage and soft tissue therapy is hands-on work on muscles, tendons and the tissue around them, using kneading, pressure, stretching and friction techniques. Tool assisted soft tissue therapy (instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation) uses smooth-edged instruments to apply similar pressure and glide over the skin. Physiotherapists use these techniques as an add-on that may ease tightness and pain and make movement and exercise more comfortable.

We use these techniques to help you move and tolerate exercise, not as stand-alone treatments. Some people find short-term relief from tightness and soreness, and others notice little difference. We review after a few sessions whether it is helping, and change the plan if it is not.

Treatment is adjusted to your comfort, and you can ask us to stop or change pressure at any time. Some people feel sore afterwards.1 The NDIS lists massage therapy among the supports it does not fund, so if you are an NDIS participant, ask us how any physiotherapy sessions link to your functional goals.5

What is involved

  • An assessment to find out what is driving your pain or tightness and whether hands-on treatment suits you.
  • Massage or soft tissue techniques, with or without instruments, at a pressure you agree to.
  • Movement or exercise straight afterwards, to make use of any short-term relief.
  • A review after a few sessions to check whether it is helping, with the plan changed if it is not.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?
+

Most of our services can be booked without one. You do need a GP referral to claim a Medicare rebate, and a Home Medicines Review or Residential Medication Management Review always starts with a GP referral. NDIS, DVA and workers' compensation claims each have their own paperwork. If you are not sure, call us on (08) 6110 0570 and we will check before you book.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
+

If your GP has prepared a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan and referred you to us, Medicare pays a rebate for up to five eligible allied health visits a calendar year, shared across disciplines. Private health cover may also contribute, depending on your policy. We confirm what applies to you when you book.

Can I be seen by telehealth?
+

Many of our services can be delivered by secure video call. Where a service needs a hands-on assessment, such as a foot or physiotherapy examination, we will book you in person at one of our ten clinics.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
+

Your referral or care plan if you have one, a list of your current medicines, any recent test results, and your Medicare, DVA or NDIS details. If you use a glucose meter, CGM or insulin pump, bring that too.

Can someone come with me?
+

Yes. A family member, carer, interpreter or support worker is welcome at any appointment. If you need an interpreter, let us know when you book.
