AHPRA, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, works with 15 National Boards to regulate 16 health professions, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy and podiatry. Its public register lets you check that a practitioner is registered and allowed to practise.
AHPRA and the National Boards run the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law. Together they set the standards registered practitioners must meet to protect the public. The online Register of Practitioners shows whether a practitioner is registered and any conditions that limit what they can do. If a name does not appear, check the registration name or number, or call AHPRA on 1300 419 495.
You can also raise a concern with AHPRA about a registered health practitioner. Not every health profession has a National Board. Dietitians and exercise physiologists are not among the 16 regulated professions; they are self-regulated through professional bodies such as Dietitians Australia and ESSA. The Credentialled Diabetes Educator credential is awarded by ADEA, and many CDEs are also registered in a profession such as nursing or pharmacy.
Our clinicians can explain how this applies to you and help with the next step, whether that is a referral, a device, funding or a plan the rest of the team can see.
